Spanish fast-fashion retailer Zara opens its largest New York store today. The new 500 Fifth Avenue flagship location boasts an even larger array of styles and a chicer aesthetic. (WWD).

 

Fashion heads are not the only ones affected by the unfriendly retail waters. This year's Design Miami fair, which is known as the most extreme, high end fair for contemporary furniture, has seen a significant drop in demand for unique design pieces. (WSJ). 

 

The current state of the economy has many designers thinking about the upcoming fall shows. The Valentino camp just announced that Valentino man won't be showing at Fashion week in Paris or Milan. (WWD). 

 

Victor Carranza, former designer/stylist to Marilyn Monroe has announced he will be launching a new line, House of Marilyn, inspired by the vixen herself. (Fashion Week Daily).

Sex is a great inspiration in a time of deepening recession. Backward-looking is fine with forward ideals. It is fascinating to watch how fashion copes with world political and financial changes and how we will adapt to new looks and creativity in a new era. Does this establish Hollywood as the capital of fashion?
