Local gems starting to shine

Daily News

In an interesting article entitled "Local Color: Shopping at Hometown Designers," Wall Street Journal contributor Christie Binkley chronicles the rising trend of "shopping local" for designer fashion and accessories. The movement closely mirrors the organic/local food movement, which has taken the country by storm, by promoting the many benefits of supporting (and fueling) local businesses.

One can only assume such a large scale shift in attitudes is possible due to the critical moment we find ourselves in today. Our current economic mayhem/meltdown has disenchanted many with the ways of larger corporations, leading consumers to now proactively look to local artisans to fill the void of the once prolific retail chains.

And fill the void they will. Shopping local has many benefits. Besides supporting the growth and success of many talented "underdogs," the consumer can now have a more personal and human retail experience. In a way, this move embraces the attention of yore; consumers and designers foster relationships, they interact, discuss, and create pieces that are infused with thought and personality. By neglecting the ways of fast-fashion, we can begin to open our eyes to the many hidden jems that surround us. And who knows, it may just be the next big thing.
