Dr. Martens' Design Challenge

Danielle Meder "Colour Puddle Jump" boot for Dr. Martens
Dr. Martens—or "Docs," as they have become affectionately known—have withstood nearly 50 years of fluctuating fashion fads. As an icon of the underground British culture, the boots have moved from a punk staple in the days of the Sex Pistols to an edgy accessory worn by supermodels like Agyness Deyn. Much of this durability derives from the shoe's simple strength, but every year Dr. Martens also gives artists, bands and fashion creatives the opportunity to make their mark on the beloved boot.

Spike Lee Did The Right Thing

Cassette Playa s/s '08
Everyone seems to be trying to Do The Right Thing by following in the steps of cult director Spike Lee with oversized baseball jackets, colorful prints and nerdy glasses. Girls Will Be Boys

A love for fashion is no longer considered an effeminate personality trait. Gone are the days of the K.D. Lang archetype—today, butch women are embracing their personal style with the same enthusiasm and aplomb as femmes or heterosexuals. And the lesbian-chic look is attracting more than just androgynous types this time around—it's spilling over right into indie fashion proper.

Girls—even straight girls—want to wear boy's clothes. For proof of the broader penetration of this tomboy take on fashion, you need look no further than the brisk sales of Rachel Comey's wingtips  read more »

The relationship between art and fashion just gets deeper.

Dressed-Down Denim

Diesel
Though they might still seem reminiscent of '80s boy bands and country singers to some of us, denim jackets are back in the limelight—largely due to the likes of Agyness and Kate, not to mention a few spring '08 runway shows. The trend's had a minute to trickle down to the High Street now, and we examine a few of the more affordable (yet chic) options.
