Danish Houses Jens Laugesen and Camilla Staerk Both Fold

Small fashion businesses are the most vulnerable during periods of economic downturn. As if the luxury market itself isn't seeming bleak enough! Two labels founded by Danish designers have now been shuttered. We've just learned that London-based Danish designer Jens Laugesen, known for his minimalist and androgynous designs, has closed his signature label after six years. The news follows last month’s announcement that Danish luxury brand Camilla Staerk was shut by its owner, Danish fashion giant Bestseller. Both have cited a lack of investment and declining sales.  read more »

Unisex Appeal

Alexis Mabille, a/w '08-'09
As we've recently reported, fashion's gender boundaries are no longer easy to define. Men are discovering their softer side, women are buying men's clothing and, in response, an increasing number of emerging labels are reinvigorating the idea of unisex fashion. Unlike the gender-neutral movements of the past—from the hippies of the '60s to the urban minimalist aesthetic of the '90s—this new crop of unisex designers is less concerned with revolution, instead aiming for a more subtle statement of power.

"We think the androgynous movement started with the Greeks and never relented," explains Tennessee Hamilton, who developed unisex label Ingar Husband with Sarah Aaronson. "Today, however, the barriers are different. Women no longer have to chop off their hair or burn their bras, but the media still seems to think they want to look like Barbie. We're not opposed to sex, but a lot of women are sick of being pigeon-holed into the archaic boxes of gender roles."  read more »

New Magazines On The Block

Day Magazine cover
It's not often you can pick up a magazine that effectively combines inspiring fashion, informative articles and interesting typography. This kind of exceptional creativity is the formula for winning longevity that has kept the likes of Dazed and Confused, iD and PaperMag running for decades. From a boutique retail print to an eco awareness magazine and an experimental publication, we bring you what's new on the stands.

Denmark's Day Magazine is an advertisement-free companion publication to fashion label DAY Birger et Mikkelsen. Following the company's bi-annual collection seasons, only 6,000 editions of each issue are printed. Now on its second issue, the magazine covers global fashion, retail developments and outstanding art movements from around the world.  read more »

International Relations: A Cheat Sheet for Online Shopping

Henrik Vibskov Blomst Dress at Tres Bien
Between gas prices, the sinking dollar and airline mishaps, the idea of taking a summer vacation abroad might seem a tad overwhelming—or just out of reach. But that doesn't mean you have to give up the cachet of saying "I got it in (insert foreign city here)," especially with the range of international shopping destinations available online. After all, they don't call it the worldwide web for nothing.

Since living back in New York, I’ve spent the last two Christmas and New Years in the City. It was never an option to stay home during this period when I lived in Paris. And I like it better that way. Getaways seemed to just happen and it was a given that at the end of the year, you’d find yourself somewhere, usually warm for me, far away from home.
