Art and fashion fusions are nothing new, but rarely do the two worlds collide so forcefully as they do in Stephen Galloway. The American-born talent has performed with and created costumes for the world's most elite dance and opera companies; provided art direction for the likes of Issey Miyake and Yves Saint Laurent; choreographed a Rolling Stones world tour; and consulted with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin on projects from Vogue editorials to Gucci ad campaigns. And, as if these highlights weren't enough for one career, this one-man tour-de-force is set to unveil a new set of fashion and performance projects for 2009.

The Higashi Sumida area of Tokyo has long been known as the center of Japan's leather making industry, producing more than 70% of the nation's pigskin leather. For the past six years, trade fair Japan Creation has teamed up the local pigskin manufacturers with new and exciting Japan-based design talent to produce runway shows under the banner "Piggy's Special." Past participants in the project have included DressCamp, Theatre Products and Matohu, while this year's talents feature aptform, designed by Tokyo-based Greek designer Michail Gkinis, as well as Yohikazu Yamagata and Kentaro Tamai's writtenafterwards.

According to designer Hikaru Matsumura, "There are many good bags, but very few with wit." To address this void in the accessories market, Matsumura, who has designed at Issey Miyake since 1993, conceived of the Unique Bag Project, playing matchmaker with an artisan baseball glove maker in Osaka and handbag craftsmen from the Issey Miyake umbrella.  read more »
