Top Five E-Commerce Sites

This year we turned to a handful of web-based boutiques that brought excitement to the online shopping experience. Check out our selection of the five sites that top our list in 2008.

A Sleek, High-Tech Man

The Paris menswear shows for spring/summer '09 are now over. Many attendees were abuzz over a trend in casual luxury (most noticeably at Lanvin), but a counterpoint to the relaxed look also emerged—one that's severe and seems straight out of a reconfigured Gattaca.

At Kilgour, for example, designer Carlo Brandelli, "tried to take away anything extraneous." The result: slim and minimal looking trousers as well as jackets tailored with Savile Row-like precision that came collar-less and with only one button.  read more »

A New Kind of Evening Wear

Kris Van Assche a/w '08
Shown at Galerie Anne de Villepoix—across the street from the laundromat that inspired his last men's show in January '08—Kris Van Assche's women's collection competed with the best shows in town. Toying with maxi-lengths, transparency and silken sheens, the looks imposed their vanguard style with subtlety. Tailored jackets and baggy pants—in shades of ivory, grey and black—defined a new kind of relaxed-yet-formal evening wear.

Van Assche Looks into Eyewear

Kris Van Assche isn't wasting anytime when it comes to adding some luster to his new profile as artistic director at Dior Homme. As Dior Homme already sports a successful line of eyewear, Van Assche has embarked on a collaboration with Oliver Peoples to launch a limited-edition collection under his own label, which debuted last month in Paris, and (it was just announced) will land in select stores this summer.

Maximum Length

Prada s/s '08
Hemlines are like the economy, so much so that the correlation between the two has been coined "the hemline theory." Dresses and skirts rose to thigh-high proportions in the '20s and the '60s, just as the stock market took a turn for the better. And now, with the economy on shaky ground, the Spring/Summer '08 runways saw the comeback of the maxi skirt. More than just a signal of a conservative market, however, this influx of long skirts seems to be a declaration that showing less leg might actually have more of an impact.

Pajama Pants

You can usually count on the people on the front lines of fashion to be dressed to the nines when attending runway shows. This week in New York, most are indeed sporting full regalia, but a select few are showing up to work wearing pajamas. It's true that some editors have a devil-may-care attitude about the week, and considering that there are over 200 presentations on the packed schedule, the sleepwear staple is comfortable attire to gallivant about in at all hours. We doubt this is just an anti-fashion gesture, though. From where we stand, waking-life sleepwear looks like an initial tremor en route to becoming an earthquake of a trend come spring.

Since living back in New York, I’ve spent the last two Christmas and New Years in the City. It was never an option to stay home during this period when I lived in Paris. And I like it better that way. Getaways seemed to just happen and it was a given that at the end of the year, you’d find yourself somewhere, usually warm for me, far away from home.
