Dallas-born, New York-based designer Cody Ross is an avant-garde swashbuckler with a penchant for punk-rock, wild geometry and directional unisex designs. He studied at the London School of Economics and worked in finance before taking up fashion and textile design. Ross took part-time courses in pattern construction at Central Saint Martins, while earning a post-grad degree in quantitative finance. After working in Shanghai for three years, he returned to New York and launched his transgressive, streetwear label Priestess NYC in 2008. Part ’80s revival, part futurism with a smattering of goth-glam, Priestess NYC encapsulates urban-girl cool with a modern take on punk couture—think vintage Vivienne Westwood meets Martin Margiela with a some Jeremy Scott thrown in. Ross’ asymmetrical jackets, elongated compression dresses, quirky silk prints (of sperm, weaponry, piranha and blowfish) and effulgent outerwear and accessories have been seen on eye-catching notables such as Natalie Portman, Tyra and Lady Gaga.

What’s hot now?
In my view there are a few hot things: Bernhard Willhelm’s cool cuts, textures and silhouettes for a/w ‘10! I’m loving all the new Preen and Raf Simons stuff, too!

What is your favorite menswear and womenswear collections from the
recent shows?
I have a few faves. First, Raphael Young shoes, which embody interesting artistic references like futurism and cutting-edge science. Second, I’m bonkers for the new Helmut Lang stuff—it’s the perfect fusion of modernism and historiography. Those draped silk dresses were perfectly engineered to complement a woman’s natural contours and I really admire the architectural technique. As for menswear, I really adore the pieces and prints from Pleasure Principle!

What’s a must have item for men this spring?
I’m still trying to get those high-top Reeboks by Korean designer Juun J.

Born in Korea and raised in France, Raphael Young’s creative vision comfortably straddles cultures and aesthetics. After ten years working for French and Italian fashion brands, he became the creative director of his own eponymous label. Though the company is based in Paris, Young spends nearly eight months of the year in Italy, where the workshop and factory are located, lending a cross-European and hands-on luxury to his looks.

What’s hot right now?

I just finished working on my upcoming Fall collection and I must say it is smokin’ hot. I’m not so much of a party freak and I have very, very long working days—when I have some time off, the hottest thing for me is a bottle of Bordeaux, scented candles and a warm bath.

What are your favorite trends at the moment?

I’ve always thought “trends” were an annoying concept. The best trends are the ones that individuals create for themselves. The trendiest trend is to be unique.

What kind of shoes should women get for the s/s ‘10 season?

Mine. Because they’re the sexiest.
