High fuel costs aren't just affecting how much we drive; the privileges of flying are also dissipating. American Airlines announced that starting June 15, each checked bag will cost passengers an additional $15-25, and other carriers may follow suit soon. For frequent flyers, owning a good-looking carry-on just became that much more essential. Here's some stylish options for summer.

For the ostentatious, nothing says look-at-me more than Jeremy Scott's Pliage bag for Longchamp. Plastered on the front is a print of an XXL gold credit card, signed by Scott himself. €175 at Colette.fr.

Partial to designer Martin Margiela's avant-garde cuts and muted colors? Consider his net mesh duffle bag from his lower-priced Ligne 6 collection. The beige bag is accented with grey antique leather and the adjustable shoulder strap makes for easier carrying. $425 at LaGarconne.com.

Ethnic prints are all over our summer frocks, but for those who tend to dress in monochrome, Wood Wood Luka's grey and blue print bag is a subtle introduction to busy patterns. And the bag is big and slouchy enough to store quite a bit. $215 at Creaturesofcomfort.us.

Designed by African art collector Jean Pigozzi in collaboration with travel bag company Porter, Limoland's brightly-colored carry-ons work equally well for guys and girls. And the sturdiness of Porter bags is near-legendary. €700 at Colette.fr.

Stealth wealth comes to fruition with Tanner Krolle's soft, grey-leather Eldon weekender. With brushed silver metal hardware, adjustable shoulder strap and protective metal feel, this Made-in-Italy bag should last for years. $1895 at eLuxury.com.

If lugging a shoulder bag through the airport sounds unappealing, Stella McCartney gives the rolling version a less staid appearance. Made from 100% recycled polyester, the designer's case for Le Sportsac comes in a snappy star print, as well as charcoal, pink and pastel floral. It has a compartment for shoes as well as pockets lining the interior walls. $475 at Lesportsac.com.
