Paint The Town Black

YSL a/w '08
YSL Pur Gloss in Noir
Lancome black gloss
No longer restricted to Goth kids and Halloween costumes, black lipstick is now appearing everywhere from catwalks to cosmetic stands—Rachel McAdams even wears it on the cover of the New York Times fall issue of T Style Magazine. Though the look is not exactly the easiest trend to pull off, when done right, it's at once modern, slightly sinister and fashionably eye-catching.

On YSL's autumn/winter '08 runway, the models' eyes were shrouded by jet-black hair, bringing all attention to their black lips. Seemingly certain that these onyx-colored pouts will become a cult hit, YSL Beauté is exclusively selling limited edition Pur Gloss in Noir (now sold out on their website).. The shiny, ink-like formula is transparent enough to be layered until the desired intensity—whether a shade of rich plum or jet black—is achieved. Though NARS discontinued their run of Times Square (a plum-based black lip color) as this niche trend came around the corner, Lancôme has already filled the void. The cosmetics powerhouse is launching a black lip-gloss within its new Color Fever lip duo—and the waiting list at Bloomingdale's is already filling up.

Black may not be the new pink in the world of lip color, but it's a refreshing alternative to playing it safe.

Black Lipstick

Lipstick Queen has a great black lipstick and gloss coming out called Black Tie Optional! You can wear it alone or layer it. Give the lips a great velvet effect. www.lipstickqueen.com

Don't buy the Black Tie Optional lipstick!

I bought this excitedly and couldn't wait to get it delivered! I have already tried their Saint and Sinner line, both are exceptionally smooth and perfect. Unfortunately, the Black lipstick, I don't know what is wrong with it, but it's very, VERY chalky and waxy. It almost has the feel of trying to use a candle stick for lipstick. The color is very sheer almost grey and would be perfect if it wasn't for the fact that the lipstick itself clumps up in little waxy bits as soon as you put it on your lips. I even contacted Lipstick Queen directly to ask if maybe I had gotten something from a bad batch. The worst part is I can't return the lipstick to the store I had it shipped from since I have already used it over and over trying to get it creamier, i.e. mixing it with vaseline and gloss and everyting else I could try, I SO didn't want to give up on it. But nothing is working and it continues to leave little waxy clumps on my lips. I also have yet to hear back from the Lipstick Queen company. Maybe I should have purchased the Gloss in Black instead. I'm so bummed about this. :(
