The Boy of Summer
July 23rd, 2008 | New York
You probably have no idea who Grahame G. Fowler is, and that's just the way he likes it. That said, his deliberately disheveled yet inescapably wearable designs are too good of a secret to keep any longer. Despite his relative low-profile, the New York-based Fowler is no newbie to the fashion world—his work with the likes of Isssey Miyike, Yohji Yamamoto and Yves Saint Laurent (to name a few) is enough to make anyone's resume look meager. Fowler's own luxurious, handmade menswear line is characterized by relaxed silhouettes, and, now in its third season, is right on the money with the casual luxe trend. Dubbed "Boys of Summer," the spring/summer '09 collection combines the meticulous tailoring of his English pedigree with an American sportswear aesthetic, resulting in garments for the laid back gent.
There are blue checkered and brightly patterned dress shirts paired beneath light-weight, crumpled suits, and the casual looks are finished with gingham belts and surprising pops of pocket squares. Fowler's attention to detail makes his pieces truly unique: tiny button holes vary in sizes and colors, while hidden straps inside jackets are designed to hold newspapers.
As the youngest person to graduate with an MA from the prestigious Royal College of Art in London, Fowler's entire first collection was immediately snatched up by Browns of London. These days, Fowler is sold in select stores throughout the world as well as at Barneys and Saks. Now that the cat's out of the bag, it's up to you to pounce.
