Top Coverage

Two key American hat labels are the cover-up choices for a slew of celebrities and fashionistas, with designs ranging from the high brow to High Street. Trained by Cal Arts in the psychoanalysis of fashion, David Mason is turning the world of hatmaking on your head. Jaunty fedoras, playful caps, stripes on pink bowler caps, and red fur felt newsboys are the hallmark of a collection that's been seen everywhere from Sex and the City to the pages of Visonaire and Italian Vogue. "Hats are the element that completely make the outfit, the cherry on top so to speak. Without the proper accessories, a garment is nothing more then draped fabric," states the designer. And with his whimsical, cheeky, '20s gangster-meets-street life creations, it's no wonder why all eyes are this American rival to the celebrated English milliners. More pedestrian, but with a large following of bold-faced names, is the garage label Von Dutch. Celebrities including Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears and Madonna are turning to the label with a strong Americana "detailing" history to go incognito during downtime and for low key stage appearances. The popular caps come in mesh, terry cloth, leather and corduroy, often worn with denim and/or a t-shirt from the label. The dusty brand is riding its new found facelift and is set to open Miami, New York, and LA stores soon.

There were so many photo ops during Claro Rio Summer, here I snap some of my friends and scenesters who attended the events. The shots were captured primarily at Michael Roberts' book signing for Saved (a photo essay on life at the beach in Rio) and at the samba rumbling fete at The Oteros and at Jo de Mer's show at Oscar Neimeyer's first house in Brazil. Enjoy!
