Space Age Knitwear
October 27th, 2008 | Paris
With his feet on the ground but head in the skies, Risto Bimbiloski's eponymous line of dreamy knitwear is the perfect addition to any woman's celestial wardrobe. Working from a childhood fascination with the stars, Bimbiloski created his spring/summer '09 garments around the idea of a Hypernova, a rare collapse of a bright star into a black hole.Bimbiloski's trademark knits lend themselves perfectly to the galaxy-laden prints—taken from the Hubble space telescope—that are impressively cut into modern silk crëpe dresses and blouses, or draped poplin dresses adorned with pops of hand-crafted crochet appliqués. White mercerized cotton hand-knit capes and crocheted body suits stand out in the collection of intense reds that fade to deep blues and eventually into stark blacks, delivering an explosive crop of innovative and exciting garments.
After finishing at Parisian design school, Duperré, Bimbiloski looked to his Macedonian heritage. His knitwear-based collection is rooted in traditional methods yet packaged in modern designs. Following a highly praised debut showing titled "24," Bimbiloski went on to collaborate with Louis Vuitton, where he contributed his knitwear skills to the menswear line. Now emerging into the ready-to-wear category, Bimbiloski stays true to the knitwear tradition that defined his life and career, while continuing his forward-thinking and humanistic vision (the clothing is all fair trade and made in a Macedonian factory). Now available at New York's Opening Ceremony and Barneys, Paris' Joseph and Japan's Adam et Rope, it looks as though the stars have aligned for this designer on the rise.
