Opening Ceremony's New Mini-Mall
April 16th, 2008 | Los Angeles
Along with the Hollywood sign and the taco stand, the mini-mall is one of LA's enduring icons. So it's only fitting that Opening Ceremony would choose to open one on the second story of their West Hollywood boutique—but don't worry, you won't find any nail salons, check cashiers or Chinese restaurants here.Instead, the newly opened floor is devoted to a selection of the boutique's New York neighbors and long-standing collaborators—Acne, Mayle, Nom de Guerre, Exquisite Costume and Schiesser. Functioning as shops-within-a-shop, these brands' mini-mall residences mark the first time most of them have occupied their own space in LA.
Unlike Opening Ceremony's rotating roster of theme shops, these brands have a permanent place in the boutique—but that doesn't mean they aren't planning surprises of their own. Just like its New York flagship, the Mayle room is set to undergo seasonal transformations, changing the décor with each collection to include textiles, colors and props that inspired the pieces on offer. Rumor has it that a few additional tenants are also on the way, with Scott Sternberg's Band of Outsiders and Boy tipped to claim their own spaces soon.
If you're still not convinced, consider stopping by for the scenery alone. Visitors now have the chance to see the top floor of Opening Ceremony's historic Harold Hammerstein building, which once served as Charlie Chaplin's dance studio.
