96 Shades of Dress
June 11th, 2008 | New York, Berlin
Last season, Kostas Murkudis integrated technology into his a/w '08 collection in such an elegant—and non-kitschy—manner that it quickly became one of our favorites. Now, the Berlin-based designer is tackling global climate change with equal panache: he's created a seasonless collection called "96 Dresses," wherein each versatile piece can be worn as a slip dress in the summer, or a first-layer garment in the winter.Although there's just one silhouette available, there are—you guessed it!—96 different chromatic options to choose from, each of which is available in sizes 36, 38 and 40, on special order. Though the effect varies depending on the color, the slightly transparent dresses feature ruching on the shoulders and seams that hit just at the waist to create a flattering shape. They're made from luxe Taroni silk—a fabric favored by the late Yves Saint Laurent and the Jil Sander label—and, to give them a lived-in feel, they are washed and then ironed.
Twenty of the dresses (in sizes 36-38 only) are available at Project No.8 in New York and at the Andreas Murkudis (Kostas' brother) store in Berlin.
