Put A Record On: Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
August 4th, 2008 | London
There's a strip club called Ye Olde Axe about halfway up Hackney Road in east London. It may be a rundown, east end boozer, but after the girls have gone home on Saturdays it turns into a swirling dance floor full of red lipstick, bryle-creamed hair, '50s doo-wop and teddy jive at the weekly Rock-A-Billy Rebels club.Kitty, Daisy & Lewis' self-titled album is the perfect soundtrack to such a night. Though roots music, country and R&B (that's old school "Rhythm Blues") might not be the first port of call for three teenage siblings from north London, the trio manages to play the music and embody the lifestyle of the 1950's.
The multi-talented musicians share singing duties while swapping instruments—masterfully playing the piano, trombone, accordion, harmonica, banjo, ukulele and lap steel guitar between them. When playing live they're supported by mother Ingrid on double bass and father Graeme on an acoustic guitar, making it a true a family affair.
The eponymous album features songs that Graeme used to sing when the band members were children as well as newly written material. Lewis wrote "Buggin' Blues," inspired by the late Otis Spann, and all three chipped in on "Swinging Hawaii." The first single, "Going Up The Country," is also an inspiring opener to the album, which was recorded by father and son in their home studio. Amid the hordes of self-styled retro bands, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis actually make yesterday's music sound perfect for tomorrow.
The self-titled album is now out on Sunday Best Recordings. Check out their myspace page for more information and a chance to listen.
