While it might be a man's world out there in terms of sharp business attire, womenswear label Charles & Victoria is setting out to make sure female professionals look as astute as they are stylish. The design duo behind the brand—Brooklyn-based Abigail Lutz and Rachel Ancliffe—are two female professionals themselves, making their unique, tailored looks a testament to this balance.
The debut autumn/winter '08 collection features masculine pieces with a feminine twist. The staple black skirt is recast as a satin draped pencil skirt with accentuated hips and braided belt detailing, while the light-weight chiffon/jersey tanks or crew-neck tees look perfect tucked into the high-waisted tuxedo pants. The collection is rounded out with simple jersey dresses and tuxedo jackets.
Boutiques such as Brenda's and Pink Label in Brooklyn and Terra in Washington, D.C. are already selling Charles & Victoria designs, while superstar Rihanna has been photographed sporting their duds. And, with an ability to create clothing that looks good on women of all sizes, this is one smart (looking) label.
